Trend 2: The increasing importance of sustainability

Our annual Trend Report for 24/25 has now been published, offering an invaluable insight into how a variety of pressures and opportunities are shaping the future of our digital and physical workspaces across all sectors. In this series of five blogs that focus on a single trend at a time, this one summarises why sustainability is now a must-have objective for all types of organisation.

While sustainability may have lingered on the C-suite’s radar for some time, we’re convinced the tipping point has arrived. Sustainability isn’t merely a nice-to-have any more, it’s evolved into a powerful differentiator for potential customers and employees alike.

Following a groundbreaking agreement at COP28 to transition from fossil fuels towards renewables and energy efficiency, this year marks a step change for sustainability. Nations are now pressed to take action to mitigate emissions. Against this backdrop, consumer consciousness about environmental issues is on the rise.

This is likely to only increase, partly due to generational shifts in mindset, and partly as a result of extreme weather events and escalating energy and food costs, which have propelled sustainability into being a critical concern for many people.

The emphasis on sustainability credentials isn’t confined to consumer preferences – it’s increasingly influencing workforce dynamics. Statistics show a trend for employed adults to prefer their employers prioritize sustainability, while other research indicates that a third of young workers would reject a job offer if the company’s ESG commitments didn’t align with their values.

Driven by these consumer and workforce demands, alongside a moral imperative, organizations are intensifying their focus on ESG credentials. This has resulted in a surge in B Corp certifications within a year, and increases in sustainability budgets across UK businesses. This trajectory is irreversible. Only companies effectively pursuing sustainable practices will hold future value as stakeholders increasingly hold them accountable for their actions.
