Accessibility Innovation Becomes Campus Standard

Over the past two years Oxford University and Aura have evolved a single pilot Auracast™ assisted listening installation into a repeatable audio standard now being rolled out across teaching spaces and public areas. The strategic partnership shows how a historic and world-renowned institution can modernise rapidly without compromising resilience, sustainability or fiscal discipline.

Campus-wide consistency for a frictionless, inclusive user experience

Tech choices reduce failure risk, cut downtime and reduce power draw
Regular performance reviews keep scope, risk and stakeholder alignment tight

Business Challenge

Oxford University’s estate blends centuries old architecture with cutting edge research facilities, creating uniquely complex AV requirements; over time, faculty level buying had created a diversity of interfaces, and Aura spotted an opportunity to give tutors, visitors and external event teams a truly consistent, intuitive audio experience across the estate.

The immediate catalyst was Blackwell Hall located within the Bodleian Library, the marble floored, 6 metre high atrium of the Weston Library. Despite being the libraries showcase public space, the hall offered no modern assisted listening provision, and its hard surfaces ruled out traditional copper induction loops. Meanwhile, visiting AV companies struggled to patch their feeds into the house Dante network without a tangle of adapters and last minute programming.

Historic building constraints barred any new cabling, and the next generation Bluetooth broadcast solution the team favoured – Ampetronic Auracast™ – was on a three month global back order. Add the fact that Blackwell Hall opens to the public at 9am sharp every day, and even a one day slip would have postponed the entire accessibility programme into the next academic term.

The Bodleian therefore needed a technology partner that could rethink the audio stack, choreograph a just in time supply chain, and deliver a cable free, network integrated assisted listening system from a mobile lift – before breakfast, without disturbing Grade I stonework, and all to an immovable academic year deadline.

What began as a pilot in Blackwell Hall has become our benchmark for inclusive audio across the University. The Auracast™ deployment is genuinely pioneering and now forms our official standard for this type of accessibility solution.

Solution

Aura answered the flagship challenge by delivering Oxford University’s first Ampetronic Auracast™ assisted listening system in Blackwell Hall, patching the Bluetooth broadcast transmitter straight into the existing Dante network over legacy Cat x runs and therefore avoiding any new cabling or disturbance to Grade I stonework. Because the preferred hardware was on a three month global back order, the team orchestrated a just in time schedule and carried out all high level work from 6am, removing the mobile elevated work platform before the hall opened to the public at 9am.

The finished system now blanket broadcasts high quality audio to every corner of the 12 metre high, marble floored atrium without individual device pairing.

A 16 port docking station and sixteen Auri receivers, complete with neck loops, headphones and ear speakers, sits at reception for visitors who lack Auracast enabled personal gear, while Dante patched input/output points behind the desk let external AV teams feed programme audio into the house system with a single cable.

The existing wireless touch panel controller was reprogrammed so staff can route sources with one tap, giving tutors, visitors and event managers a common, intuitive interface wherever they work on campus.

Regular review sessions with Procurement and Estates now log receiver checkout rates, user feedback and network analytics, ensuring the project is judged on measurable outcomes rather than anecdote, while an Aura service agreement underwrites ongoing support and firmware updates.

Early feedback is emphatic: the cable free, Dante integrated Auracast™ workflow removes the coverage gaps and maintenance headaches inherent in legacy loop tapes, lets visiting crews integrate “as easily as plugging in a laptop,” and has already become the blueprint for inclusive audio roll outs across the wider Oxford University estate.

Now, over a year into our partnership with Aura, we are very pleased with the experience. The whole team has been consistently responsive to our needs, quick to implement improvements, and clearly guided by a strong value system, one where they remain on site until everyone is satisfied with the outcome. This is a genuinely collaborative relationship, where both parties are learning and evolving. We all understand that our work has a direct impact on teaching and learning, and that getting it right first time is vital for enabling others to succeed in their purpose here at Oxford.
